Niagara Falls is the most famous water fall in the world because of its beauty and immense size. Niagara Falls is part of the Niagara River. The Niagara is a short river, just 35 miles (56 kilometers) long. It connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario in eastern North America. East of the river is the United States. West of the river is Canada. About halfway between the two lakes, a sharp drop in the river makes Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls is actually two giant waterfalls and one smaller one. Goat Island, in New York state, lies between the two main falls. One big waterfall, called American Falls, is on the U.S. side of the river. American Falls has a fairly straight edge. The waterfall is 1,075 feet (328 meters) wide and 182 feet (55 meters) high. A small part of American Falls, located near Goat Island, is called Bridal Veil Falls.
The biggest of the two giant waterfalls is in Canada and is known as the Canadian Falls. It’s also called the Horseshoe Falls because of its horseshoe shape. The curved edge of the Canadian Falls measures 2,200 feet (670 meters) wide, and the water drops 187 feet (57 meters). The Canadian Falls carries nine times more water than the American Falls.
Niagara Falls is a popular tourist attraction. Millions of people come each year to watch the spectacular waterfalls. You can take a boat trip to see the falls from below. You can also watch from observation decks above or beside the falls. You can even enter the Cave of the Winds, a path that takes you to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. Visitors must wear bright-yellow rain jackets to stay dry.
Niagara Falls makes an enormous, ground-shaking roar and a huge cloud of water mist. Rainbows shine through the mist. At night, the falls are lit with colored lights, creating a brilliant display.

The word tornado is from the Spanish word tronada, which means “thunderstorm”. This funnel’s narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris and dust. Most tornadoes have wind speeds, between 64 km/h and 179 km/h.

Soal structure and written expression dalam ujian TOEFL diujikan dalam sesi kedua setelah uji listening. Alokasi waktu untuk menjawab soal tersebut hanya 25 menit. Lumayan singkat bila merujuk pada jumlah dan level kesulitan soal. Bentuk soal tipe tersebut ditujukan untuk menguji kemampuan dalam mengenali formal written English. Soal structure and written expression merupakan dua tipe soal yang berbeda, berikut penjelasan singkatnya,

Tipe Structure

Tipe soal ini dibuat untuk mengukur kemampuan kita mengenali bahasa yang tepat dalam standar bahasa Inggris tertulis ( standard written English). Pertanyaan dalam soal structure merupakan soal incomplete sentence (kalimat rumpang), dengan pilihan jawaban (A), (B), (C), dan (D) yang berupa kata atau frase. Pilihlah salah satu kata atau frase yang tepat untuk melengkapi kalimat tersebut.   Beberapa tips yang bisa dicoba dalam menjawab pertanyaan structure adalah sebagai berikut :

• Baca kalimat secara keseluruhan, kemudian coba masukkan jawaban (A) dalam rumpang kalimat tersebut.
• Bila tidak benar, analisislah mengapa kalimat tersebut tidak benar.
• Bila pilihan jawaban (A) bukanlah jawaban yang benar, maka cobalah pada pilihan jawaban (B), (C) dan (D).
• Cobalah untuk mengingat pola atau rumus yang benar kalimat yang digunakan.

Inilah contoh pertanyaan pola structure yang saya kutip dari Buku Cliffs TOEFL Preparation Guide.

Pembahasan : Pilihan jawaban (A) bisa langsung kita hilangkan karena penggunaan who tidak tepat dengan verbal structure-nya "is being lived". Untuk "A life" mungkin saja bisa diterapkan, namun untuk "a person" tidak cocok untuk diterapkan. "Live" biasanya tidak bertindak sebagai complement, oleh karena itu tidak bisa dijadikan kalimat pasif. Pada pilihan (B),  bukanlah jawaban yang benar, karena "does" dan "in the" tidak diperlukan dalam kalimat tersebut. Pilihan jawaban (C), merupakan pilihan yang benar, karena memenuhi syarat  "subject + verb + (complement) + (modifier), dan untuk pilihan jawaban (D), bukanlah pilihan yang benar karena tidak sesuai dengan aturan tersebut diatas (subject + verb + (complement) + (modifier)).

Tipe Written Expression

Dalam tipe written expression, setiap kalimat memiliki empat kata atau frase yang digaris bawahi. Kata atau frase yang digarisbawahi di tandai dengan (A), (B), (C), an (D). Salah satu dari kata atau frase tersebut "salah", dalam artian harus diubah menjadi pola yang benar agar supaya kalimat tersebut menjadi tepat. 

Sebagai contoh, berikut ini adalah soal tipe written expression.

In the(A) United States, there (B) are much (C) holidays throughout the (D) year.

Pembahasan : Penggunaan "much" tidak tepat diterapkan karena kata "holidays" merupakan kata benda yang bisa dihitung (count noun), oleh karena itu kata "much" tidak tepat dan seharusnya diubah menjadi kata "many" untuk lebih tepatnya.

Nah, untuk melatih kemampuan anda dalam menghadapi ujian TOEFL khususnya dalam soal tipe structure and written expression, berikut saya kumpulkan soal tipe tersebut dengan jumlah soal sebanyak 40 butir soal yang terdiri dari 15 soal tipe structure dan 25 soal tipe written expression dengan materi soal yang dipilih sesuai dengan tingkat kesulitan level uji TOEFL. Kita sering menemukan soal bentuk written expression dalam soal bahasa Inggris seperti TOEFL, TOEIC atau bahkan tes untuk masuk sekolah kedinasan. Soal tipe ini lumaan berat karena menuntut kejelian kita untuk menjawab dengan keahlian grammar yang dimiliki.

Ciri- ciri soal tipe written expression, setiap kalimat memiliki empat kata atau frase yang digaris bawahi. Kata atau frase yang digarisbawahi di tandai dengan (A), (B), (C), an (D). Salah satu dari kata atau frase tersebut "salah", dalam artian harus diubah menjadi pola yang benar agar supaya kalimat tersebut menjadi tepat. 

Adapun tips yang perlu dicoba adalah sebagai berikut :

• Baca kalimatnya secara lengkap
• Kenali lagi pola kalimat yang benar dalam kalimat
• Tandai kata atau frase yang salah

Microsoft Sway merupakan aplikasi besutan Microsoft yang memungkinkan kita untuk membuat dan berbagi laporan, presentasi, cerita pribadi dengan mudah. Sistem kerjanya sederhana, dengan menggunakan kanvas berbasis web Sway, anda dapat dengan mudah menambahkan konten multimedia dari seluruh web hanya dengan drag and drop. 

Melalui Sway anda dapat bercerita menggunakan konten interaktif. Selain itu fitur Sway juga memungkinkan anda untuk menyematkan video, bagan interaktif dan beberapa materi multimedia lainnya untuk membuat cerita lebih menarik. Dalam pembelajaran, bisa anda terapkan dalam tugas siswa untuk membuat sebuah cerita atau project. Sway juga memudahkan dalam menemukan gambar, video, tweet, dan konten lain yang relevan untuk ditambahkan ke kreasi anda.

Saat Sway siap, anda dapat dengan mudah membaginya dengan orang lain yang dapat mengaksesnya di web tanpa mendaftar atau mengunduh perangkat lunak tambahan. Anda dapat mengubah pengaturan privasi untuk kontrol lebih lanjut. Saat ini Sway tersedia di web, Windows 10, iPhone dan iPad.

Aksi plagiarisme dipandang sangat meresahkan. Penjiplakan secara ilegal yang dilakukan untuk tujuan tertentu seperti pembuatan tugas, skripsi, tugas akhir dan sebagainya. Aksi ini kemudian didukung oleh pemanfaatan teknologi terkini. Hanya dengan sekali klik saja dokumen sudah dapat diplagiasi dengan mudah. Istilah familiarnya adalah copas dengan tanpa menyertakan sumber aslinya dan diakui sebagai milik plagiator itu sendiri.

Untuk menghinari hal ini, kita sebagai pendidik tentu harus juga selangkah lebih maju. Pemanfaatan teknologi sangat penting dalam penerapannya khususnya dalam mencegah maupun mengenyahkan aksi plagiat ini. Dalam tulisan ini akan saya bahas dua web tool efektif untuk mencegah adanya aksi plagiarisme dalam pembuatan tugas siswa.

1. Wcopyfind

Wcopyfind merupakan sebuah program opensource yang digunakan untuk memeriksa dokumen. Sistem dari aplikasi adalah dengan membandingkan dokumen dengan mengacu pada kesamaan  kata atau frase yang digunakan dalam dokumen- dokumen tersebut. Aplikasi ini memungkinkan kita menggunakannya tanpa menginstal program tersebut di laptop atau komputer kita. File aplikasinya juga tergolong sangat kecil sekitar 2 MB. Baca terlebih dahulu panduannya agar lebih mudah mengoperasikannya.

2. PaperRater

PaperRater merupakan sebuah web tool untuk plagiarism checker dan proofreader . Selain untuk masalah plagiarisme, PaperRater juga mengecek kesalahan tata bahasa / ejaan, pilihan kata, dan struktur kalimat. Tentu saja ini akan membantu guru dalam mempersingkat waktunya untuk mengoreksi kesalahan- kesalahan dasar siswa dalam penulisan dasar (basic writing). Tidak perlu pendaftaran, atau login dan semuanya gratis tanpa pembayaran apapun.

Pendaftaran sekolah kedinasan tahun 2019 akan dibuka sebentar lagi. Calon pendaftar diberikan tenggang waktu dari 9 April sampai 30 April 2019 untuk mendaftar. Proses pendaftaran dimulai melalui dua portal yaitu sscasn.bkn.go.id dan dikdin.bkn.go.id dilanjutkan proses registrasi melalui website sekolah kedinasan masing- masing.

Sama seperti perekrutan PNS, Secara umum semua pendaftar sekolah kedinasan akan melalui berbagai macam tes yang bertahap dan salah satunya adalah seleksi kompetensi dasar (SKD) melalui sistem CAT BKN.

Seleksi Kompetensi Dasar (SKD)

Seleksi Kompetensi Dasar merupakan tes untuk mengukur kemampuan dan karakteristik dalam diri seseorang berupa pengetahuan, keterampilan, dan perilaku pendaftar sebagai alur bahwa pendaftar yang diterima dan nantinya lulus akan diangkat menjadi seorang PNS.

Beberapa materi pada seleksi kompetensi dasar mencakup antara lain sebagai berikut;

1. Tes wawasan Kebangsaan (TWK)

Tes  Wawasan  Kebangsaan  (TWK)  untuk  menilai  penguasaan pengetahuan dan kemampuan mengimplementasikan nilai-nilai 4 (empat) Pilar Kebangsaan Indonesia yang meliputi:

• Pancasila; 
• Undang-Undang Dasar 1945;
• Bhineka Tunggal Ika; 
• Negara  Kesatuan  Republik  Indonesia  (sistem  Tata  Negara Indonesia, sejarah perjuangan bangsa, peranan Bangsa Indonesia dalam tatanan regional maupun global, dan kemampuan berbahasa Indonesia secara baik dan benar).

2. Tes Intelegensi Umum (TIU)

Tes ini dimaksudkan untuk dimaksudkan untuk menilai

• Kemampuan   verbal   yaitu   kemampuan   menyampaikan informasi secara lisan maupun tulis. Materi untuk tes ini  mencakup padanan kata, pengelompokan kata, sinonim dan antonim.
• Kemampuan numerik yaitu kemampuan melakukan operasi perhitungan angka dan melihat hubungan diantara angka- angka. Materi kemampuan numerik mencakup tes hitungan (aritmetika), tes logika angka, tes seri angka dan tes seri huruf serta tes angka dalam cerita.
• Kemampuan  berpikir  logis  yaitu  kemampuan  melakukan penalaran secara runtut dan sistematis; dan
• Kemampuan  berpikir  analitis  yaitu  kemampuan  mengurai suatu permasalahan secara sistematik. Contoh soal kemampuan analitis seperti tes logika umum, tes simpulan silogisme, tes analisis pernyataan, dan tes logika cerita.

3. Tes Karakteristik Pribadi (TKP)

Tes Karakteristik Pribadi ini bertujuan untuk mengenal karakter, kepribadian dan tingkat emosional pelamar, untuk materi detailnya, mencakup :

• Integritas diri;
• Semangat berprestasi;
• Kreativitas dan inovasi;
• Orientasi pada pelayanan;
• Orientasi kepada orang lain;
• Kemampuan beradaptasi;
• Kemampuan mengendalikan diri;
• Kemampuan bekerja mandiri dan tuntas;
• Kemauan dan kemampuan belajar berkelanjutan;
• Kemampuan bekerja sama dalam kelompok;dan
• Kemampuan menggerakkan dan mengkoordinir orang lain. 

Passing Grade Tes Kompetensi Dasar (TKD)

Nilai ambang batas (passing grade) yang harus dipenuhi pada Tes Kompetensi Dasar (TKD) sesuai dengan peraturan Peraturan Menteri Pendayagunaan Aparatur Negara dan Reformasi Birokrasi Republik Indonesia Nomor 20 tahun 2017 tentang nilai ambang batas Tes Kompetensi Dasar (TKD) tahun 2017 adalah 

• Tes Karakteristik Pribadi (TKP) sejumlah  143
• Tes Intelegensia Umum (TIU) sejumlah 80
• Tes Wawasan Kebangsaan (TWK) sejumlah 75

Seleksi kompetensi dasar (SKD) menggunakan sistem computer assisted test (CAT). Berdasarkan pengalaman tahun 2018 lalu, banyak dari para pendaftar yang tidak lolos pada bagian tes karakteristik pribadi (TKP) mengingat jawaban soal yang relatif semuanya benar. Karenanya, latihan soal dan menjawab soal berdasarkan sudut pandang pekerjaan bisa lebih membantu untuk lolos passing grade tes tersebut.

Menambahkan Materials ke dalam Course merupakan poin yang terpenting dalam mengelola pembelajaran berbasis Schoology di kelas anda. Dengan menguasai fitur ini, guru akan lebih mudah dalam mengelola segala kepentingan pembelajaran baik dalam hal pemberian tugas maupun materi. 

Untuk menambahkan course materials di Schoology, ada beberapa langkah yang mesti diikuti, berikut caranya,

Untuk menambahkan materi pelajaran, navigasikan ke menu Course anda dan pilih Add Materials dari tampilan Courses anda. Buat Courses anda, kemudian isikan Courses Name, Section Name, Subject Area, dan Level. 

Beberapa bahan dapat ditambahkan ke dalam kursus (courses), buatlah folder lebih dahulu dengan menggunakan ikon Add Folder dan kemudian akan muncul tampilan pop up untuk mensetting folder anda. 

Anda bisa mendesain folder anda dengan menambahkan Judul, Warna, Deskripsi, Tanggal Aktif (jika berlaku) dan Tingkat Visibilitas.

Saat folder baru sudah dibuat, tambahkan material ke dalam folder tersebut. Pada menu Add Materials kemudian pilih Add Assignment dalam folder tersebut. 

Pada halaman Add Materials, isikan nama tugas anda (name); tambahkan deskripsi (description). Pada bagian bawah Description (ditunjukkan dengan kotak warna merah), silahkan upload file dari komputer anda. 

File dapat berupa format PDF atau Word. Selain itu, anda bisa memasukkan tautan sebagai material anda.

Pilih tanggal Jatuh Tempo (due date), dan klik Save Changes saat sudah selesai.

Siswa akan melihat tugas muncul di umpan berita (news feed) mereka serta di bilah pemberitahuan begitu anda selesai dalam melalui proses penambahan Course Materials ini.
