Latihan Soal Bentuk Both, Either dan Neither dalam Kalimat Bahasa Inggris

Penggunaan both, either, dan neither dalam kalimat bahasa Inggris kadang membingungkan. Ketiganya memang digunakan untuk menyebut dua hal, benda atau orang tetapi memiliki arti dan makna yang berbeda dalam penggunaannya. 

Nah, untuk lebih jelasnya berikut pembahasannya,

Both

Both diartikan "keduanya". Dalam penerapannya, Both digunakan untuk  menyatakan dua hal yang sama. Apabila diikuti dengan noun, both diikuti bentuk noun and noun . Bentuk both juga diikuti oleh plural nouns (kata benda bentuk jamak atau  kata benda dengan akhiran -s/-es). Untuk kata kerja yang mengikuti bentuk both, selalu menggunakan kata kerja bentuk jamak. Selain kedua bentuk diatas, both juga bisa berdiri sendiri.
Contoh :

• I have met both your father and your mother. They are kind. (Saya sudah ketemu ayah dan ibumu keduanya) --- both +  noun and noun
• Both time and money will be spent in the Covid-19 vaccine research. ( baik waktu dan uang, keduanya akan dihabiskan dalam penelitian vaksin Covid-19) ---both +  noun and noun
• I have lived in Semarang and Surabaya. I liked both cities especially in their traditional food. (Saya sudah pernah tinggal di Semarang dan Surabaya. Saya suka keduanya khususnya pada makanan tradisionalnyya) ---both + plural nouns
• We went to Pantai Baron and Drini last week. Both beaches are beautiful. (Kita pergi ke pantai Baron dan Drini minggu lalu. Kedua pantai tersebut  bagus) ---both + plural nouns
• I cannot decide which of the two T-shirts to buy. I like both. (Saya tidak dapat memutuskan dua T-shirt yang akan saya beli. Saya suka keduanya) --- both berdiri sendiri

Both of

Bentuk both of juga sering kita temukan dalam kalimat. Both of dalam kalimat bisa diikuti oleh bentuk the, these/ those, dan my/ your/  his. Kita bisa menggunakan atau menghilangkan bentuk of pada bentuk my/your/these/those,dll. Sedangkan pada bentuk both yang diikuti oleh object pronouns seperti us/ you/ them, maka bentuk of  nya harus ada.
Contoh ;

• I liked both of those MotoGP riders. They are amazing.  atau I liked both those MotoGP riders. 
• Both of my brothers are married.  atau Both my brothers are married.
• Both of us are very tired. We'll camp here.  (  Both us are very tired)

Either/ Neither
Dalam sebuah kondisi pilihan, either digunakan untuk menunjukan sebuah pilihan dari dua opsi yang dimunculkan. Neither digunakan bila tidak ada suatu pilihan pada keduanya.

Contoh :

• Do you want coffee or tea? Either. I don't mind. (--- memilih salah satu apakah kopi atau teh---)
• Both of these restaurants are very good. We can go to either restaurant.
• Do you want tea or coffee?' Neither (--- tidak ada yang dipilih ---)

Untuk kata benda yang mengikutinya, baik either maupun neither diikuti oleh bentuk singular noun,

Contoh,

• Neither hotel is good. Let’s go somewhere else.
• Both beaches are beautiful. Neither beach has dangerous waves.

Either of/ Neither of
Demikian seperti pada bentuk both of, baik either of maupun neither of  diikuti oleh the .../ these/those, my/ your/ his,them/us/you etc.

Contoh :

• I haven't  read either of these novels.
• Neither of the children wants (or want) to study normally. **
• We didn't eat anything. Neither of us was hungry.

Sebagai tambahan untuk melengkapi pemakaian Both, Either dan Neither, adalah penerapan pada soal persesuaian (concord agreement) mengenai ketiga bentuk diatas, yaitu

1. Both ... and ... , maka verb nya adalah plural.
2. either .... or ... , neither .... nor ..., maka verb-nya menyesuaikan dengan subjek yang disebut paling akhir.

Contoh ;

• Both Jaka and Arya are working on their new project now.
• Neither Maura nor Shinta is going to the beach.
• Either Maura or her friends are going to the party.
