Object of prepositions merupakan sebuah preposisi yang diikuti oleh sebuah noun, pronoun, gerund atau noun clause. Dalam soal struktur TOEFL, kita harus selalu mengecek bentuk subject dan bentuk verbs yang sesuai. Namun, hal ini kadang sulit dilakukan pasalnya subject dan verb terpisah oleh prepositional phrase. Padahal, prepositional phrase tersebut tidak memiliki dampak terhadap kata kerja (verb) dalam kalimat.

Contoh 1:

The study of languages is very interesting

The study merupakan singular subject yang memiliki kesesuaian dengan singular verb (kata yang digarisbawahi). Kata yang dicetak tebal berwarna merah merupakan prepositional phrase. 

Contoh 2:

Several theories on this subject have been proposed.

Several studies merupakan plural subject sehingga harus memiliki kesesuaian dengan plural verb yaitu have been proposed. Kata yang dicetak tebal berwarna merah merupakan prepositional phrase.

Contoh 3:

The view of this disciplines varies from time to time.

The view merupakan singular subject sehingga harus memiliki kesesuaian dengan singular verb yaitu varies. Kata yang dicetak tebal berwarna merah merupakan prepositional phrase.

Contoh 4:

The danger of forest fires is not to be taken lightly.

The danger merupakan singular subject sehingga harus memiliki kesesuaian dengan singular verb yaitu is. Kata yang dicetak tebal berwarna merah merupakan prepositional phrase.

Contoh 5:

The effects of that crime are likely to be devastating.

The effects merupakan plural subject sehingga harus memiliki kesesuaian dengan plural verb yaitu are. Kata yang dicetak tebal berwarna merah merupakan prepositional phrase.

Beberapa ekspresi berikut ini, tidak memiliki dampak terhadap kata kerja seperti 

• together with
• accomanied by 
• along with 
• as well as 

Contoh 1:

The actor, along with his manager and some friends is going to the cinema tonight. 

Pada kalimat tersebut, ada kesesuaian bentuk subject dengan verb-nya yaitu the actor yang merupakan singular subject , meskipun diikuti oleh along with ..., yang memiliki makna banyak, namun tetap diterapkan dengan bentuk singular verb yaitu is going ...

Contoh 2:

Mr. Rudi, accompanied by his wife and children, is arriving tonight.

Dalam kalimat di atas, Mr., Rudi merupakan subject tunggal meskipun diikuti oleh bentuk accompanied by, namun tidak ada perubahan dalam bentuk verb-nya yaitu tetap memakai bentuk singular verb (kata kerja tunggal).
