Dalam soal TOEFL khususnya soal structure, bentuk appositive seringkali membigungkan, pasalnya seringkali bentuk tersebut mengecoh sebagai sebuah subjek dalam kalimat. 

Sebagai gambaran dari bentuk appositive, berikut ini contoh soal appositive yang dapat teman- teman analisis untuk memulai mempelajari bentuk Appositive. 

Mirza, the best student in the class, won a debate competition. 

Pada contoh di atas, Mirza merupakan subjek dari kalimat dan the best student in the class adalah bentuk appositive phrase yang merujuk pada keterangan dari subjek yaitu Mirza. Sehingga Mirza dan the best student  in the class adalah orang yang sama. Dan apabila kalimat the best student in the class dihilangkan, maka kalimat tersebut masih dapat bermakna,yaitu Mirza won a debate competition.

Apa itu Appositive Phrase

Appositive Phrase merupakan sekelompok kata yang berfungsi memberikan keterangan tambahan kepada subject dan object. Appositive Phrase dapat berupa noun, adjective, adverb, atau prepositional phrase, berikut contohnya.

1. Sebagai Noun

=== Mrs. Risma had asked Jasmin Hutabarat, a prominent lawyer, to represent her in court.

2. Sebagai adjective

=== The professor, unaware that many of his students were asleep, went right on lecturing.

3. Sebagai adverb

=== The gentlemen over there by door is our accountant.

4. Prepositional phrase

=== Mr Pramono, in a hurry to get to the airport, took a taxi from his home.

Susunan kalimat dengan Appositive Phrases.

1. Perubahan adjective Clause menjadi Appositive Phrases.

Adjective clause dengan bentuk BE dapat disingkat menjadi bentuk appositive phrase dengan menyisakan pelengkap (complement) sesudah bentuk BE, contoh :

Contoh 1

=== Rama, who is a really good technician, is fixing the machine.

menjadi 

=== Rama, a really good technician, is fixing the machine.

Contoh 2

=== The driver who is responsible for the accident will have o pay for it.

=== The driver responsible for the accident will have to pay for it.

2. Letak appositive Phrase dalam kalimat

Appositive phrase biasanya terletak sesudah noun yang dijelaskan dan diletakkan diantara dua tanda koma.

Contoh :

• Farah, eager to get a scholarship, studied hard day and night.
• The high-powered computer machine, the most powerful of its type, was finally readied for use.
• The new tile pattern, yellow flowers on a white background, really brightens up the room.

Appositive phrase juga bisa diletakkan pada awal atau akhir kalimat, asalkan mengacu pada subject main verb-nya.

Contoh :

• His uncle refuse all help that was offered him, a proud and unbending man.
• Anna worked hard day and night, eager to get ahead in her career.

Pada kalimat His uncle refuse all help that was offered him, a proud and unbending man, bisa diperhatikan bahwa a proud and unbending man mengacu pada kata "his uncle" atau subject main verb-nya.

Pada kalimat Anna worked hard day and night, eager to get ahead in her career, dapat dicermati bahwa frase appositive eager to get ahead in her career mengacu pada subject main verb yaitu Anna
