Pengertian, Penggunaan dan Contoh Expletive There dalam Bahasa Inggris

Dalam ungkapan sehari- hari, kadang -kadang kita menyatakan bahwa sesuatu itu ada atau tidak ada. Dalam Bahasa Inggris, cara menyatakan sesuatu itu ada atau tidak ada adalah dengan menggunakan kata There. Adapun susunan dari pemakaian kata There tersebut adalah dengan menambahkan kata kerja (verb) bentuk Be ( auxiliary/ modal) kemudian diikuti dengan kata benda yang mewakili an indefinite person ( orang yang tidak tentu) atau sesuatu (things). There biasanya diletakkan sebelum verb be dan kata bendanya diletakkan setelah Be.

Contoh :

1. There is someone at the door. (Ada orang di pintu)
2. There is a student in the class. ( Ada seorang siswa di dalam kelas)
3. There are students in the class. ( Ada siswa- siswa di dalam kelas)
4. There is something wrong. ( Ada sesuatu yang tidak beres)
5. There will be a farewell party  tonight. (Akan ada pesta perpisahan nanti malam)

Ada beberapa aturan dalam penggunaan Expletive There, antara lain sebagai berikut :
1. There + be + pro(noun) + expression of place or of time.
Contoh :

• There is nobody there.
• There is a car in the garage.
• There is much milk in the glass.
• There were a lot of students here yesterday.
• There is going to be a party tonight.

2. There + be + noun with adjective ( modifier)
Contoh :

• There are different ways to do it.
• There are many smart students in the class.
• There are some people who support her.

3. There + be + noun + Present Participle/ Past Participle.
Contoh :

• There is strong wind coming up from the west.
• There was a boy water skiing on the lake.
• There were many victims injured in the Merapi eruption.
• There have been more Americans killed on the Iraq war.

4. There + be + noun phrase + to-infinitive clause 
Contoh :

• There is important for the employees to know about the new rules.
• There was no use for us to discuss about the problem.

5. There bisa dipakai sebagai subjek dalam infinitive dan -ing clause.
Contoh :

• I don't want there to be any more trouble.
• She was disappointed at there being  so little to do.

6. Expletive There dan here juga bisa digunakan dalam exclamatory sentence (kalimat seru)
Contoh :

• There she is! ( Itulah dia!)
• There goes the bell! ( Ada lonceng yang sedang berbunyi!)
• Here she comes! ( Itu dia datang!)
• Here I am! ( Inilah saya)

Selain beberapa aturan diatas, bentuk Expletive There juga bisa digunakan sebelum beberapa kata kerja berikut ini:

          appear, come, go, happen, live, remain, seem, enter, follow, dan sebagainya.
          Contoh :

• There lived a family in the forest.
• There seem to be two reason for his success.
